Heritage Works Buildings Preservation Trust contracted Countryscape to produce a publication based on the ‘All Work & No Play’ project, which from 2005-2006 recorded and archived the oral histories, photographs and other memorabilia of the current and former residents and workers of Ancoats – an inner-city suburb of Manchester and formerly the hub of the city’s cotton industry. The emphasis of the project was on leisure time rather than the industrial history of the area.
The result, developed in close collaboration with Heritage Works staff, is a richly illustrated publication which uses a 'scrapbook' concept to present excerpts from the oral history interviews, alongside images of people, places and artefacts, sourced from local residents, archives and photographed by Countryscape.
The publication was produced using high quality, Forest Stewardship Council certified paper stocks and vegetable oil-based inks.
Please note, the interactive book is a large file (7mb) and on slower internet connections it may take a while to download – but we think it’s worth the wait!
