Friends of the Lake District (FLD) is a landscape charity covering Cumbria. Countryscape, in association with Alison Farmer Associates, ran a three-day Landscape Character Assessment training programme for FLD. The training provided a general introduction to the practices and principles of LCA, followed by training in how to carry out an LCA and how it can be used in a planning context.
Practical training on carrying out an LCA was provided through a selection of case studies, which the delegates then assessed as part of a desk study before completing a field survey. The training then used the findings of the desk and field studies to understand how to develop guidance for development and biodiversity. The training concluded with considering how the information in an LCA can be used as part of the planning application process, and analysis of how landscape and visual assessments can be used as evidence in planning applications.
